It seems like there is some type of code used on the right questions and topics to discuss? Any suggestions?
I am horrible at business networking?
Just go about it the same way you would if you were socially networking. Ask them about themselves, their job, where they live, where they went to school, and how they got into such-and-such field. If you're interested in their field, maybe you could bring up a relevant topic that you've recently read about or ask them a question about their job. Eventually you will probably find some common ground, like a former coworker that you both know. If they spend more time talking about themselves than asking about you, that's OK because people love to talk about themselves. It will make them like you as a person and then they will easily recall your name and face when an opportunity for your services comes up. Just be sure that you give them your business card before you part ways so that they are not entirely clueless about what it is that you do!
