Network Marketing Business?
I was shown the Amway plan a few days ago, and was quite keen in joining, but I've heard some negative things regarding the network marketing community. Can i really make money in a network marketing business such as Amway? How good is their products? Is it true that I will be so called 'owning my own business', by the sentence 'Independent Business Owner'? Or is it just a scam?
Network Marketing Business?
Amway has made a lot of ppl rich. However, I suggest you join a legitimate company that doesn't require you to have inventory to sell. What ends up happening is ppl beef up a big ole' inventory and find it very difficult to get rid of it via selling. Most of them regret the experience and end up giving everything away to friends and family.
I joined a legitimate online business with YTB. I don't need an inventory and my product, TRAVEL, is something everybody buys anyways....why not have them simply buy it from my website instead of some faceless website. I get the commissions instead of the other guys...can't beat that!

Reply:Amway is a network marketing business. First, there is nothing wrong with network marketing companies (Tupperware, Avon, etc.). Amway's products are not bad, but Amway has the worst busniess reputation in the world. They are always in trouble with Better Business as well as every other consumer group out there. That is why the keep changing their name (i.e., Quixtar). Also, Amway has burned a lot of folks, who now have a garage full of products they paid for, but can't get rid of. As for network marketing, you can be successful at it, but you have to learn how. You need to learn sales and marketing for this type of business, THEN pick a business that you have researched in detail (which may or may not be Amway for you). I learned all this the hard way, until I read the free ebook The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing (http://chrisandpatricia.the7greatliesofn... It reset my thinking about my business and helped me develop a marketing plan. Try reading it, before choosing a company.

Do your research on the company!!! I can't stress that enough. The company I decided upon was listed on the Inc. 500 list five times (that's once more than Microsoft). They've been in business for 22 years and I used the products before I ever agreed to endorse them. I was told in advance how much to expect in compensation based on how much work I put into my business.
I was drawn to the value of the company, healthy and effective products, low start up cost, no inventory to stock, no distribution of products, money back guarantees, and an easy to understand compensation plan.
Reply:With the right company, product, and compensation plan it works. What do you know about network marketing? Does the company have products or services that improve peoples lives? As you may have read there are plenty of scams out there. Check the company out on the better business bureau and any other third party business investigators for unbiased information. That's what I did and I found a good company. I was a customer for about six months before I even thought about really promoting the products. Out of the six different people I know doing amway or quixtar none of them are making any money. Some of them have over 100 people in their downline and been doing it for over 2 years with little to no results. From what I've seen with these companies it is hard to duplicate any big sucess. Small business idea... feedback would be nice.?
I would like to start up a small business for extra sidecash while im doing tafe (or college for you americans =) ).
It would be a home networking business (i do network engineering at tafe). Offering anything from setting up peoples broadband to integrating voip and multimedia into thier home network.
Do you think this would be successful? would you know anyone or would you yourselves use a service like this?
Im just trying to decide if its feasable to make money off this, if people would use it or not

best advertising is word of mouth so get it out there.

Never pay someone to work for them.

I changed the routers ip address to 192.168.1.3... thinking the linksys wireless router was trying to use that-- i didnt have luck..... there is also another building----- with a router and two switches.......

Hi guys.... I need to set up a small network for my company and have a short time scale I first would like to know the stages of doing this? What should I start on first Servers? Cabling? Also this is a sister company of our main company so should I create a new domain?....But how would I share resources if I need to VPN?

You should have a server and create a new domain since it is a sister company. You will use AD (using Windows Server and Exchange for email) to communicate and set up the trust relationships between the domains. You will need a router as well to handle traffic. From there, you can set up a hub (wireless/wired - Linksys). Are the companies physically close to eachother? If so, you might be able to skip some steps. You'll need to define functions and office layout so you can build your internal network accordingly (set up printers). If you need a hosting company, let me know (youdotoo.com).

It's my first time setting up a small business network (1 Dell PowerEdge 2900 server + about 7-8 workstations). All the workstations run Win XP Home. What OS is best to use for these workstations now that I am intending to connect them to the server?

WinXP Pro would be better. It offers more security and better manageability in a networked environment.
If the server is just a file and printer server, you can still get away with using XP Home, but its not the best solution.

I have a basic idea of what needs to be done, but I am not too sure if this is the best way to do this.
I am planning on getting a firewall to go between the DSL modem and a router. However, I am not sure what kind of router/switch to use because I am not sure how to handle splitting the static IP addresses. The FTP server will need to reside on the 2003 server (either via IIS or Linux running in virtualization).
I also need to configure incoming VPN using Windows 2003 Server.
I would like to know what the Best Practices for this situation would be. I'm having a a hard time finding this info on the web.

First, you should use a router to interface with with the ISP. You cannot use the household grade ones. With 5 static IP addresses and an FTP server, etc you need something more robust. Check out www.adtran.com for Adtran units. Feel free to contact their prepurchase support and they will help a lot.
I would use the router to interface with Verizon. I would dedicate one static IP for FTP and probably use a dedicated XP box for FTP (rather than risk hackers on my server). I would put the FTP server in the DMZ so the router should be DMZ capable.
I would have the router control the IPSec VPN at the router level as well.
Let the server address LAN DHCP; assign static IP to the router, the server, and probably to print servers and the FTP server.
The router can direct the public IP addresses appropriately but this is a configuration matter - part of the config you need to do. Adtran will help to a large degree.
Because this is heavyweight, you may wish to get technical support locally.

The outside interface of the Pix will be the WAN address provided by Verizon. A global NAT pool will be created using the static addresses from Verizon while the inside computers will actually use private addresses, such as 192.168.x.x.

No, Dish is being its normal cheap self and refusing to carry the new channel. I hate being stuck with Dish as the CEO loves to play these games to squeeze another penny per subscriber out of any channel he carries.
Remember what he did with Court TV last year? Took them off the network for a couple of months after threatening to move them to some upper channel number (lower tier, less prime spot) and demanding reduced fees. Eventually Court was back on its normal channel (one below Fox News), so all it did was alienate Dish's customers.
So, as Dish members, we get nothing. If you have Dish, please write and express your displeasure. I have.

Is the Fox Business Network on Dish Network?
No, Dish is being its normal cheap self and refusing to carry the new channel. I hate being stuck with Dish as the CEO loves to play these games to squeeze another penny per subscriber out of any channel he carries.
Remember what he did with Court TV last year? Took them off the network for a couple of months after threatening to move them to some upper channel number (lower tier, less prime spot) and demanding reduced fees. Eventually Court was back on its normal channel (one below Fox News), so all it did was alienate Dish's customers.
So, as Dish members, we get nothing. If you have Dish, please write and express your displeasure. I have.

I called Dishnetwork today and they have no clue. They told me they never heard of it. Hard to believe, but true. I spoke with 2 different reps too.

Reply:You can make money with Melaleuca but I think most people, if they were being completely honest, would have to admit it does not pay the bills. Some, very few, are earning a decent income. The problem with Melaleuca is they have passed hyper-growth, meaning all the big money has already been made. I have been in Network Marketing for many years and found Melaleuca particularly difficicult to earn an income. Some people argue that point with me but when I put my comp plan up against theirs, there is no comparison. I know the plan because I was with Melaleuca.
So I guess it boils down to doing your homework. Look for the product of today.....a product in demand, something that you can get excited about...something that can benefit absolutely anyone. Once that is established, look at the compensation plan and ask people who are working the plan what their income is like. I work with some of the top people who were in Melaleuca and they are now earning in excess of $10,000/mo. and they joined in December.
This is not meant to be anything against Melaleuca, but if there are superior opportunities out there why not have a look at them?

Most of the money comes from building the network not selling the products to my knowledge. They have really good products and the corporate people are all honorable people. I am wondering how profitable the online ad network business is. Someone mentioned to me it is at best 10% gross margin business - is that right? Any articles or data on it someone could point me to?

Well, that depends upon how much you spend per month. If you are spending in excess of a million per month, then 10% is probably close, but may be a little low.
However, I only spend about $10,000 per month, and my margins are usually above 50%.
The smaller you are, the easier it is to find little niches where there is a large profit margin. You can't do that with a big budget, though, there aren't enough small niches available.

Thinking of doing a computer service business?
Currently im attending college for my AA, I need money for a higher degree or certificate. How would I go about starting my business legally. I am not sure I understand the question. Does your friend have a small business and is wondering if he/she should do business networking? Or is he / she looking at getting into a network marketing business?
If the business is in place already, networking with other businesses, business minded people is a MUST and there are no 'cons' only 'pros' for doing this.
If the friend is thinking about getting into network marketing - there are definite pros and cons.
The pros of starting a network marketing business is ultimately financial and time freedom, independence, being one's own boss.
The cons: finding a suitable business, with sustainable products, a good comp plan, quality leadership and training, etc. There are many programs / companies to chose from on the internet and finding the right fit with all the other components is the tough part.

Well, you have hit the nail on the head there. It's not easy for some people (for me neither) but practice makes it better.
First of all, to get to networking events where it's easy to chat to people there are several groups organized around the uk. One of them Chamber of Commerce, which you need to subscribe and they almost have at least one networking event a month.
Others, which are private could be BoB, BRE, the best of...(city/town) to which you have pay subscription. Those groups are easier to break the ice because everyone is there to do exactly the same and if you are shy, people still will talk to you.
I think the best technique so far (at least works for me) is to show interest in the other person's business before you start talking about yours. It always gives them a little bit of importance and they're more likely to listen to you afterwards.
This is something I have recently been doing and I didn't find it easy either. You develop a speech as time goes by and you can gather people's reactions as you talk about your business.

F = family. find out if they are married, kids, etc but not in a creepy way, if you know what I mean
O = occupation. what do they do, do they enjoy it, do they like where they work etc. It also lets them ask about you so you can tell them a bit about yourself
R = recreation, holidays, where and how often, what else do they enjoy doing, get to know their interests, again gives you chance to find common ground
M = money, a touchy subject for some people but a way to find what is really important to people what they want to spend their money on.
In all conversations it is most important to listen actively, so you can carry on talking about what they have just said rather than being there while they answer and thinking about what you are going to ask next.
a good place to gain extra tips is reading how to win friends and influence people (it does exactly what it says in the tin) and personality plus to understand how people think and how to get on with them better. good luck

I'm a Retirement Advisor. I help people plan for and invest in their present/future retirement needs (same thing as a Financial Advisor except I like to focus on investments geared towards retirement).
I've tried a few different networking groups and have not had much success with them. I've also played the religion card and attempted to join an organization that is through my religion. This approach has turned out to be more religious dating than actual business networking.
I'm extremely interested in networking; however, I can't seem to find the right place to do it. While I'm not the greatest networker, I am more than comfortable to do public speaking engagements, presentations, strike-up conversations, etc. I just can't seem to find the right place to do all this.

Networking with like-minded individuals is also a great way to explore new career options, learn more about a specific industry, gather insights from peers on critical business issues and grow professionally.
Networking With a Goal in Mind
Think about what you want to accomplish by joining a particular networking group. Are you looking for a job, trying to develop new business or do you want to expand your network of contacts and become known as the go-to person in the industry? You can choose to be either an active or passive member of the group, but will get the most out of the experience by regularly attending and participating in the activities.
Once you decide on the networking group that matches your goals, you can immediately increase your visibility by volunteering to participate on a committee.According to Executive Career Consultant Kathleen Jennings, of The Jennings Company, "It's not who you know, it's who knows you." It's probably the best opportunity you will ever have to make connections, build relationships and help yourself and others in the networking group succeed. Networking with like-minded individuals is also a great way to explore new career options, learn more about a specific industry, gather insights from peers on critical business issues and grow professionally.
Networking With a Goal in Mind
Think about what you want to accomplish by joining a particular networking group. Are you looking for a job, trying to develop new business or do you want to expand your network of contacts and become known as the go-to person in the industry? You can choose to be either an active or passive member of the group, but will get the most out of the experience by regularly attending and participating in the activities.
Once you decide on the networking group that matches your goals, you can immediately increase your visibility by volunteering to participate on a committee.According to Executive Career Consultant Kathleen Jennings, of The Jennings Company, "It's not who you know, it's who knows you." Joining a professional networking group is an opportunity for you to gain access and exposure to people you might not otherwise meet: a company executive in an industry that you've always wanted to learn more about, a keynote speaker who's an expert in your field, and yes, even someone who may be in a position to offer you a job, or who can connect you to the hiring manager at a company where you've always wanted to work.
You can find out when and where networking groups meet by scanning the business-events section of your local newspaper or business weekly.
