You could consider starting a Meet-up on meetup.com. Search meet up for entrepreneurs or for small business owners. There might be some small business owners on meet-up that are also looking to Meet up.
From there I would think about what topics are important to small biz owners and start finding people to speak at the meet-up.

Can a business use 2 different types of networking? Like a Ring and Star?
I'm not going to ask why....
Yes, you can have different topologies together. It is the job of the router to facilitate communications between them.
Can a business use 2 different types of networking? Like a Ring and Star?
Yes. By creating separate sites within a business, you can have both ring and star topologies, even at the same location. The question is... why?

Does anybody have any good networking ideas on building your business i.e generating sales leads etc...?
Ive been networking and generating leads for sometime in my mortgage business. it takes time and money to do things right. i talk to everybody i come in contact with and make friends. maybe that person knows somebody who may need my services or maybe that person is an accountant that can utiize my services to better help their own clients. i use direct mail with a targeted market using 4 color glossy postcards and have a team of people follow up with phone calls. telemarketing is getting tricky with the do not call list laws and regulations (plus nobody wants to talk to a telemarketer). i also give free education in a public forum to prospective clients, real estate agents, financial advisors.. i also have a website that i market through yahoo to give myself the best shot at a client shopping for a loan on the net

depends on the type of business. You need to first identify best prospects-be specific. The more you can target the product/service, the more effort you can put into reaching that specific audience,.
Reply:The best way is to build a brand and then marketing the brand through dealer network. This is the way I did and my brand is more or less very famous now.

How long until wireless networking becomes the norm for business and LAN cables become a thing of the past?
Hopefully never.
Just another problem to troubleshoot.
How long until wireless networking becomes the norm for business and LAN cables become a thing of the past?
Never. LAN cables will always be used for business to remain secure. Anything wireless can be hacked.
Reply:Probably quite awhile. It isn't that wireless isn't useful, however, wireless can increase the variables for IT, and can cause a number of security issues and challenges. I would say this, for some businesses, wireless may be not far off as security may not be that big of an issue, but for those businesses where security is paramount, wireless has a ways to go.....
Reply:Never ever.
Reply:We are already experiencing the change. Every day more businesses changes their LAN to Wireless Connections instead of using cables. I think that in less than 15 years more than 60% of the businesses are going to be using Wireless. But it is not a safe thing to do unless they fix the problems that Wireless may have to prevent hacking...
Reply:they should NEVER change the hardline option, unless they come out with some kind of ultra secure wireless device that no one can hack......which probably will not happen in our life time. So do not count on anything switching FULLY over during our life!
Reply:I concur with computer doctor, never, because anything wireless can be hacked, if not now, then eventually. In addition to that, wired networks are generally speaking, faster connections, wireless networks will (at least with current technology) be limited in speed due to distance between routers and maximum bandwith supported, etc. If they could perfect it however, having entirely wireless networks would be pretty cool though.
Reply:Not until there is a huge leap in wireless security and/or wireless becomes as fast as LAN transfers. I believe the fastest wireless network is N (108 Mbps?). Wired LAN for go Gbps, so it's a long ways from "a thing of the past"
Reply:This will be reality maybe in several years.. It will catch on feel fast trust me.. With all the new gadgets requiring WiFi to access the internet.. No one will just use a LAN Cable anymore..
Reply:I don't think it will happen. It will never be as fast or as secure as wired networks.

I want to create a monthly IT service contract for a small business network. What price should I charge?
I am starting an IT consultant company and I am not sure what I should charge for long term service contracts for small business networks.
I want to create a monthly IT service contract for a small business network. What price should I charge?
Look around what other similar service providers are charging, and charge about 30% more than that. Offer the 30% as discount to the guy who gets you business.

What is better a server system or stand alone computer for smalll business network system?
Researching options for networked business system. Is an expensive server necessary? Will a stand alone computer work just the same? 4 computers are networked currently.
What is better a server system or stand alone computer for smalll business network system?
You do not need a server, a standard computer that is powerful enough will be fine because this becomes the network server.

Reply:You didn't specify what applications you are running. I'll make some assumptions and say get a file server. It makes backup easier than a bunch of individual machines. Make sure everyone uses the server for data they want to backup.
If you get an IT guy, then he can run automatic backup on all machines, but that's probably not you.
Reply:what will the server be used for?
basic file server / e-mail server / web server / print server?
in any case for a 4 computer network a basic workstation can act as a server. it more cost effective and with only 4 pcs I don't see a large need for an expensive server if its only for basic uses.
Reply:Eventually server investment will pay off. U wanna have a centralized and controlled environment. U can still use the old 4 pcs but take off all the software loads from them by loading them up in the server. U can also back up the PCs in the server and setup the PCs as just work stations in a domain structure. I would buy a server for sure.
Reply:Hi, Allot of that depends on what you do, if your doing simple file sharing, a normal computer can do just fine, if your looking into where the users have to log into a domain and have ALOT of security set on the users on what they are allowed and are not allowed to do, then a server would do you more good, but the licensing can run you bit more depending on what kind of server software your using. As far as the hardware used for servers, just like computers, you can get low end or high end, a lower end Dell server is about $460 without the operating system up to $8,000 for a very high end with the Software starting from 500 to 800 for 5 users. While Windows Servers have there place and are well needed in many places, Allot of applications prefer if your on a Server, BUT if you are just using it to share some smaller files or to store back ups, a small peer to peer will do. All depends on what you plan on doing with it. Remember, the more complicated the system, the more maintainance it needs.

Can someone advise on best internet security suite for small business network set-up?
We have a small office set-up of 10 computers and we are connected to a small business server. Currently our network is protected with Sophos anti-virus but would like to know if there are other products available that can provide a higher internet security suite for our network? You can also comment on how satisfied you are with your current internet security provider. Would greatly appreciate your comments. Obviously would like to hear from users rather than sales persons. Thank you!

hmm..there are a number of things you can do to be secure.you need the software.lets see.as far as a firewall goes i reccomend comodo firewall.its free for lifetime,it blocks all open ports so nothing bad can get in without your permission, and warns you when something is trying to connect to the net.as far as anti-virus goes, you should look into avira anti-virus,its the best anti-virus with very good detection.also up in the ranks is NOD32.but thats commercial.avira is freeware.not sure if they charge for commercial use.
comodo firewall.

you dont really need any other programs.with those 2 youll be pretty safe as long as you dont visit any malicious sites.
