I'm a Retirement Advisor. I help people plan for and invest in their present/future retirement needs (same thing as a Financial Advisor except I like to focus on investments geared towards retirement).
I've tried a few different networking groups and have not had much success with them. I've also played the religion card and attempted to join an organization that is through my religion. This approach has turned out to be more religious dating than actual business networking.
I'm extremely interested in networking; however, I can't seem to find the right place to do it. While I'm not the greatest networker, I am more than comfortable to do public speaking engagements, presentations, strike-up conversations, etc. I just can't seem to find the right place to do all this.
I'm wondering if anyone has any non-traditional ideas/approaches to networking (for an advisor). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to do more networking professionally. Do you recommend any non-traditional groups to join?
There's a web site called Linked In that might be useful.

Beyond the Business Card
Networking in the 21st Centur
By Cheryl Ferguson
Digg Networking is more than just a buzzword. It's probably the best opportunity you will ever have to make connections, build relationships and help yourself and others in the networking group succeed. Networking with like-minded individuals is also a great way to explore new career options, learn more about a specific industry, gather insights from peers on critical business issues and grow professionally.
Networking With a Goal in Mind
Think about what you want to accomplish by joining a particular networking group. Are you looking for a job, trying to develop new business or do you want to expand your network of contacts and become known as the go-to person in the industry? You can choose to be either an active or passive member of the group, but will get the most out of the experience by regularly attending and participating in the activities.
Once you decide on the networking group that matches your goals, you can immediately increase your visibility by volunteering to participate on a committee.According to Executive Career Consultant Kathleen Jennings, of The Jennings Company, "It's not who you know, it's who knows you." Joining a professional networking group is an opportunity for you to gain access and exposure to people you might not otherwise meet: a company executive in an industry that you've always wanted to learn more about, a keynote speaker who's an expert in your field, and yes, even someone who may be in a position to offer you a job, or who can connect you to the hiring manager at a company where you've always wanted to work.
You can find out when and where networking groups meet by scanning the business-events section of your local newspaper or business weekly. Visit the website of the networking group before going to the first event to learn more about their members, mission and focus. Armed with this information, you can go to the next breakfast, lunch, or after-hours function prepared with questions for the members and guests you introduce yourself to at the meeting. Stay Connected Between Meetings
The internet is a great tool to use to stay visible and connected to your networking group between meetings. You can:
Search on Yahoo! for the name of the person you're planning on meeting for that informational interview.
Forward a link to an article of interest to the new member you met at the last function.
Send an email with contact information for a referral.
Post a reply to a request on the group's message board.
There's a fine line between being seen as a resource and being seen as a spam artist; don't send excessive or inappropriate email. Make sure that your contacts between meetings are relevant and pertinent to the business at hand.
Listen First
An easy way to relax at a networking function is to take the focus off yourself by first listening to the other person. This technique also helps you gain insight as to how that contact can help you, making the connection that much stronger. It's not about collecting the most business cards; it's about collecting the right ones.
Thank-you notes and quick follow-up to requests for information are little courtesies that mean a lot. Your professionalism will be noted, your calls returned and your referral business will blossom. It also signals to the parties involved that you are committed to success -- yours and theirs.
If you take advantage of all that networking has to offer, and if you have joined the right networking group, you'll find that suddenly, you seem much more visible. People will seek you out and recognize you as a valuable resource.
If you're networking correctly, you'll find you have more visibility, greater knowledge, and a wider circle of reliable contacts; and that you can leverage those assets to further your career

I'm looking for creative networking ideas to try, to get small business owners out from behind their counters.
You could consider starting a Meet-up on meetup.com. Search meet up for entrepreneurs or for small business owners. There might be some small business owners on meet-up that are also looking to Meet up.
From there I would think about what topics are important to small biz owners and start finding people to speak at the meet-up.

Can a business use 2 different types of networking? Like a Ring and Star?
I'm not going to ask why....
Yes, you can have different topologies together. It is the job of the router to facilitate communications between them.

Yes. By creating separate sites within a business, you can have both ring and star topologies, even at the same location. The question is... why?

Does anybody have any good networking ideas on building your business i.e generating sales leads etc...?
Ive been networking and generating leads for sometime in my mortgage business. it takes time and money to do things right. i talk to everybody i come in contact with and make friends. maybe that person knows somebody who may need my services or maybe that person is an accountant that can utiize my services to better help their own clients. i use direct mail with a targeted market using 4 color glossy postcards and have a team of people follow up with phone calls. telemarketing is getting tricky with the do not call list laws and regulations (plus nobody wants to talk to a telemarketer). i also give free education in a public forum to prospective clients, real estate agents, financial advisors.. i also have a website that i market through yahoo to give myself the best shot at a client shopping for a loan on the net

depends on the type of business. You need to first identify best prospects-be specific. The more you can target the product/service, the more effort you can put into reaching that specific audience,.
Reply:The best way is to build a brand and then marketing the brand through dealer network. This is the way I did and my brand is more or less very famous now.
